Limitless Adventures has launched a new D&D5E product line: 5th Evolution.

What is 5th Evolution?
5th Evolution (5Evo) takes the wildly popular D&D5e game mechanics and applies them to new genres. 5Evo products are a marriage of comics and roleplaying with each book
divided into three sections:

  • Part 1: the comic. Each 5Evo book opens with a comic that GMs will share
digitally with their players prior to the gaming session. These comics serve to
introduce the genre and setting, as well as to get players invested in the coming
    adventure.
  • Part 2: the adventure. The second section of the 5Evo book is a one-shot
adventure, complete with pregenerated characters, that picks up where the comic
    left off.
  • Part 3: the source guide. Finally, the third section of each 5Evo book is a source
guide that gives the GM the monsters, equipment, and characters to create their
own adventures in that particular genre.

The best part? All 5Evo products are completely compatible. Want to have space marines
fight a T-Rex, or see how your wizard would fare against a machine gun-toting mech?
Well you can do that and more with 5Evo.

What Genres Will Be Available?
Three different books will be available during the Kickstarter: Super Heroes, 80’s Horror
Movie, and World War 2.

Becoming One of Them — A Writer’s Notebook

When I was younger, I played Dungeons & Dragons a couple of times with some friends I had back then. I don’t remember liking it all that much. I felt the storylines were unoriginal, and the characters we created had little to no depth. Whether those statements are true or teenage me was being overly […]

Well we’ve managed to last 8 years. My parole officer said it would never happen, but this sweetass Yoda cake I stole off the interwebs paints a different story. If something interesting happens, we’ll be here to tell you about it. Like a Firefly reboot (that should get us some SEO traffic) or D&D 6th Edition (We shouldn’t joke).

Adventure.exe D&D Live Play

“Four low life thugs with hearts of pyrite play D&D on the worldwide podcast phenomenon ADVENTURE.EXE.”

Unless you live in the Underdark, you’re aware of the massive surge in live-play D&D games, both as podcasts and on video streaming channels like Twitch. I have been thoroughly enjoying one such game called, Adventure.exe.

Adventure.exe is bitingly funny, deliciously crude at times, and refreshingly unreserved. (Have I used up my adverb quota for this post? Get off my ass, Steve). One area where I think this podcast excels and sets itself apart from the masses is in its audio quality. This may seem like a weird thing to point out, but after being at the helm of B3 for the last six years,  I’ve been asked to listen to several podcasts and videos with poor audio quality that hampered my ability to immerse myself in the game. The cast at Adventure.exe puts forward a quality show that is crystal clear. Speaking of the cast, they have a great back and forth that makes for some quick-witted comedy.

Their characters:

  • Iados – Tiefling – Rogue – LVL 6
  • Paula – Half-elf – Sorcerer – LVL 6
  • Blorpo – Human – Barbarian – LVL 6
I’m still early in my journey into the worlds of Adventure.exe, but I’ve loved everything I’ve heard so far. Sometimes it can be daunting to start a series in the middle of their story arc, but if you start here, with the summary episode you’ll be fine. If you have the time (maybe you’re a long-haul trucker or sitting on death row for choking an uppity mime) start here with episode one and enjoy the ride.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah, who plays Paula, and she was able to give me some first hand insight into the game. Here is a portion of our conversation:

1.) Give your elevator pitch for the podcast. Sum it up in one sentence.

Adventure.exe is a story-driven, comedic D&D podcast where four friends slash their way through fantastic encounters and become far too emotionally attached to their chronically KO’d characters.

2.) What makes Adventure.exe different from other live play podcasts?

I work as a video editor and writer, so I try to approach Adventure.exe like it’s an ultra low-budget TV show (minus the parental rating system). I spend a lot of time editing each episode, both for audio quality and to ensure the story is always moving forward.

Matt (our DM) is an incredibly talented storyteller. He weaves storylines and NPCs into his campaign in such a clever way that we often have these moments of horrible clarity as players– one of his characters will have offhandedly mentioned something innocuous a few sessions before, and when a major plot point is suddenly revealed we’ll all remember that moment and all go, “Oh my god, it all makes sense!”. He also does the voice of our party’s pet dog, Marv. What’s not to love?

3.) What wine pairs best with stirge kabobs?

Anything that comes in a box, no stemware required. Let’s face it– stirge kabobs aren’t exactly the epitome of class.

4.) What is the most difficult part about hosting a podcast?

I’d say that the hardest part about hosting this podcast is when I have to put the show aside and go back to my actual job. I would love to do this kind of thing full time.

5.) Do you find yourself playing differently when you’re being recorded?

We record our sessions with the four of us gathered around a super tiny table that’s loaded with audio equipment and Player Handbooks, so the actual setup is a lot less comfortable than a regular game of D&D, where I’m usually sprawled out on a couch like an animal.

When it comes to actually playing, it’s definitely a different experience knowing that I’ll have to edit the episode at the end of the day. Often when something major happens in our campaign I’ll get one of the guys to do a cliffhanger take that I can end a show on, or use to build up the anticipation. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it leads to super awkward speeches that are usually hilarious, that I end up leaving in (see the intro to #015: Enter the Monastery). The reason we started this podcast is we were all playing together and laughing so much at the insane direction our campaigns usually went, and we wanted to capture that energy and share our stories with other people– so that part has stayed consistent.

If you enjoy cultist frat boys, the juicy taste of Blorpo fruit, perverted lions, and just a hint of cannibalism, then I strongly recommend Adventure.exe.

Wizards to Convert 7 Classics to 5e

Wizards announced recently that their next big release will be a collection of classic dungeon converted into fifth edition. This is a departure from the previous 5e campaign books, and we’re left wondering if there won’t be another campaign until fall 2017. Let’s hope that this small foray into other worlds means a departure from the Realms as Chris Perkins has promised us.

Grab Tales from the Yawning Portal

From wizards.com:

There are many iconic adventures and stories in the 43-year history (!) of Dungeons & Dragons that current fans may not have ever experienced. If you just got into D&D in the past few years, you likely haven’t braved the Tomb of Horrors or climbed White Plume Mountain or fought Against the Giants. Even longtime fans haven’t been able to fully explore the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan or the Sunless Citadel with stats and monsters updated for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

Now you can jump into some of the most popular D&D modules ever created with Tales from the Yawning Portal. Releasing wide on April 4th, this 248-page book contains seven full adventures including timeless classics and more recent best-sellers like Forge of Fury and Dead in Thay, all completely updated and ready to run using the latest D&D rules.

The cover of Tales from the Yawning Portal was illustrated by Tyler Jacobsen. It depicts Durnan the Wanderer, the longtime owner and barkeep of Waterdeep’s most famous tavern. Adventurers from all over the Forgotten Realms gather in the taproom at the Yawning Portal to trade stories of their exploits and rumors of far-off treasures, some even from other worlds in the D&D multiverse. The Yawning Portal is the one place you’d expect to hear tales of the seven dungeons in this book.

Look for Tales from the Yawning Portal in your local game store on March 24th! Otherwise, you can pick it up on April 4th, and start running these classic adventures for your gaming group. Even if you’re in the middle of a Storm King’s Thunder or Curse of Strahd campaign, clever Dungeon Masters and players can take inspiration from D&D’s history to infuse traps, challenges, monsters and magic items from these adventures into any session.
