The 31th Season of the Bristol Ren Faire has Ended

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on September 4, 2018 by boccobsblog

On the border of Illinois and Wisconsin sits the country’s best renaissance faire.  The Bristol Ren Faire has been transporting people back to 1574 for 29 years. I have personally attended this faire over 25 times since the early 90s and have never had a bad experience. Bristol has nearly 200 artisans, amazing food (to include vegan, GF, and vegetarian options), rides and games, music and plays on 16 stages, and more bars than you can shake a tankard at. Now we begin the long wait until next July…

Saturday, July 9th, is the opening day for this year’s Bristol Renaissance Faire. The Faire has long been a family favorite and I’ve attended every summer for the last 25 year or so. Bristol has great food, music, entertainment and drinks. If you live in the Midwest, I cannot recommend this event enough. So what’s new this year?

Do you play D&D 5th edition? Check out of Ravenloft Encounters on DM’s Guild.

Jeff Easley at the Bristol Renaissance Faire

The highlight of this year’s Bristol Ren Faire (aside from my yearly tradition of getting shitty on mead and puking a turkey leg into the cleavage of a 300-pound woman dressed like a fairy), was seeing Jeff Easley.  If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Easley’s work- he did the art for much of second edition D&D (the DMG and the PHB for example). The cover art he did for the D&D basic set (the Troy Denning Black Box) remains, to this day, my favorite D&D image (and the reason I joined the hobby).

In my mind, there is no greater fantasy artist than Mr. Easley.

If you get a chance, visit his booth at the faire or visit his website.

Bristol Rennaissance Faire 2011

Posted in Gaming Culture with tags , , on July 29, 2011 by boccobsblog

The Bristol Renaissance Faire never disappoints. This year’s trip was one of the best yet (which is saying something since I’ve been attending for the last twenty years). Every year the faire seems to have gained some new shop or attraction that keeps the it vibrant and exciting.

Many of the buildings have been given facelifts and new roofs and the landscaping was the best I’ve ever seen. While I was sitting on a bench resting a hummingbird dressed like a tiny dung-sweep swooped in and drank from a flower inches away from my face.

My friends and I took in a show by Christophe the Insulter where he decimated audience members with filthy verbal abuse that left me laughing and greasy-feeling.

We ate faire food until we were about to burst: BBQ ribs, cheese fritters, turkey legs, Gyros piled with fresh veggies, etc. And we drank enough booze to float a Spanish galleon. (This year the Faire added hard liquor to its many pubs and taverns.)

We marveled at the costumes and the weapons, (and at the bearded old man in a chainmail bikini and purple fairy wings).

All in all it was an amazing day that I highly recommend to anyone in the Midwest. With tickets costing on 17 dollars and parking a mere two bucks, it is much cheaper than a day ay an amusement park.

 From the website:

Where is the Faire?

Just west of I-94 at the Illinois/Wisconsin border, the Faire is open Saturdays and Sundays and Labor Day Monday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine, from July 9 through September 5, 2011.

What are the dates and hours?
We are open Saturdays, Sundays, and Labor Day Monday, July 9 through September 5, 2011 from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm.

3 Reasons Why Summer Can’t Come Fast Enough!

Posted in Gaming News with tags , , , , , , , on April 1, 2011 by boccobsblog

The only thing getting me through this Midwestern weather is idea that summer is just around the corner. The three events I can’t wait for are:

1.) Gen Con

Slated for August 4-7, the world’s longest running gaming convention will hold its 42nd con. Early registration for the “best four days in gaming” is open and event registration open on May first. One thing I can say from my past Gen Con experiences is, don’t wait until the day of the con to get your badge or register for events. Popular games and events like True Dungeon sell out almost instantly.

2.) Bristol Renaissance Faire

July 9th – September 5th of this year one of the world’s largest Ren faires will transport people to the year 1574 to spend a day in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. As if great food, music, games, acting, jousting, and drinks weren’t enough, the Bristol Ren faire also has Ren Quest. Ren Quest is an interactive rpg that uses the entire 30-acre village and over a 1,000 inhabitants to create a one of a kind gaming experience. Imagine playing D&D in a renaissance era village with thousands of npcs in full period costumes.

3.) Free RPG Day

June 18th flock to your local game store and get your swag! These are some of the free gaming products being offered this year:

  • Wizards of the Coast- Free 4e adventure
  • White Wolf Publishing- World of Darkness Quickstart
  • Mayfair- Settlers of Catan: Catanimal Variant Rules
  • Q-Workshop- Unique FUDGE Dice

And that is just four of the twenty-one companies sponsoring the event

This will prove to be an amazing summer!
