Game of Thrones, Season 8, Episode 1 Review

Got

The Wall That Martin Built
A review of Game of Thrones, Season 8, Episode One.

By Ben Baer

The man who created the narrative should wield the pen. If you would take a man’s story, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear its final arc. And, if you cannot bear to do that well, then perhaps the story does not deserve to be told.
These are the thoughts that come to mind as we see the final season premiere of Game of Thrones. A television show that has become a phenomenon and, like many creative ventures in the fantasy and science fiction realm, has grown to Balerion sized proportions causing its creator to lose control of the reigns. George R.R. Martin wrote a master work of fantasy, but it has yet to be completed. His intricacies of foreshadowing, the appropriation of historic events into his narrative (such as the Black Dinner), and resonating lines such as Ned Stark’s thoughts on execution made a wonderful tale. Then, like a horde of white walkers, the fandom came for it.  They tore through every plot point and scrutinized every novel; they tore through the wall of foreshadowing and predicted, early on and very accurately, who the true heir to the Targaryen line would be. Perhaps it is these acts that have seemingly placed Martin into a writer’s paralysis. Whatever the reason, the show for the past two years has suffered from the absence of Martin’s source material, and the premiere of the final season exemplifies this absence.

Horn Blast One… Brothers Returning to the Watch

Game of Thrones has a complex cast of characters, which is the most compelling part of Season 8, episode 1. Everyone seems to be drawn to Winterfell, where we anticipate a final climactic battle.  It is also very interesting to see how the opening sequence has involved. A vast map that once spanned continents is now focused on the intricacies inside these locations. All of these characters and their story arcs have been building to fewer and fewer places. No one would have dreamt during season one while riding with the khalasar that someday Dany would find her way to Winterfell.

There is also a striking parallel plot structure between this episode and the very first episode.  The episode begins with Daenerys entering Winterfell like King Robert long ago. It also ends with Jaime Lannister interacting with Bran, but in an obviously inverted dynamic.

There is a strong amount of dread and mystery developed in the scene where the young lord is stapled to the wall in a white walker fire swastika of doom. This symbol has been left before, and leaves a solid enigma for the viewers to contemplate. If you wander into the fandom there are a number of theories regarding this, including some who have said it is a recreation of the Targaryen crest; what this could possibly mean has intriguing implications.

Horn Blast Two…. Enemies Approaching

While there are some enigmas to contemplate, this episode also has various obvious moments of pandering to fans. For example, there was the scene where Dany and Jon recreate How to Train Your Dragon by taking a leisurely ride, despite the fact that there is a horde of enemies approaching. Let us also not forget that the Night King has at his disposal surface-to-dragon zombifying spears!

This episode was also filled with inconsistent and irrelevant characters. Everything which occurs at King Landing now seems insubstantial, especially when it contains the scenery-chewing character of Euron Greyjoy. We are left with Cersei’s line about, “ If you want a whore buy her. If you want a queen…,” apparently wait for about 30 seconds. Their whole relationship development has been painful to watch.

Speaking of Greyjoys, who cares about them whatsoever? Go to Winterfell; don’t; set sail for Asshai; let the Iron Islands sink into the sea- this arc is stale. Another superfluous story line for fan service is the dilemma of Bronn. This sellsword has been impishly fun to watch from the days he kicked a knight out the moon door and was promised a castle, but squeezing him into this premier seems like another simple fan service. It was also a cheap excuse to squeeze in nudity, which HBO has had to seemingly had to leave out lately due to the inconveniences of having to cover actual plot.

Horn Blast Three… The Others

The place where a lack of source material becomes most obvious is in the clumsy dialogue upon which the exposition has become so dependent.  As said before, we had lines in the first season which were literature: “He who passes the sentence should swing the sword…,”  as well as, “A mind needs a book like a sword needs a whetstone.”  This episode has not one, but TWO different jokes about people’s balls. In fact, the first testicular crack is delivered by Tyrion himself, and it is almost as if the show has become self-aware of its own inadequacies as Sansa says to him, “I used to believe you were the cleverest man alive.” Perhaps he was more clever when the writers were more capable.  Jokes about gonads aside, the entire episode is filled with other groaner lines.  Whether it be a joke about blue eyes, tongue-in-cheek lines about Bran’s powers, or whining about not having elephants, much of the dialogue comes off like the nineties sitcom version of what is actually a rather gritty narrative.

The Wall Comes Down

Criticism of the dialogue aside, one can take heart that this saga is reaching its end.  It will be captivating if the show finds the shock and tragedy which won over its viewers in the past. Westeros has taught us that it is an unsafe world. Knowing that this is the last season, we may say goodbye to a number of characters before the last episode and that can have the potential to be both captivating and heartbreaking.  One can hope that at some point we will see this band of characters fight a desperate last stand at Winterfell versus the Others.  No matter what happens, night gathers and the end of our Watch begins. We are the watchers. We shall pledge to watch the next episode, and all other episodes to come until our Watch has ended.

Fantasy Shopping Table Review

JBT

The following is my review of the Fantasy Shopping Table (FST): A random encounter generator for D&D, by Jason Bradley Thompson.

A San Francisco native, Jason is a talented author and game designer.  He is from Mockman Press, and well-known to fans of D&D for his comic walk-throughs of classic adventures. Longtime B3 readers may recall our review of Jason’s hit game, Mangaka, or our review of his unique D&D5e divine caster class, The Priestess. FST has great artwork by Konstantin Pogorelov, as well as an easy-to-navigate layout by Jumana Al Hashal.

In the author’s words, “Fantasy Shopping Table gives adventurers who like shopping as many plot hooks as adventurers who like binge-drinking in seedy establishments.” FST makes buying gear and items more exciting than simply looking up the item in the Player’s Handbook. The FST separates markets into Common and Black, a designation which affects both the cost of items, and their availability.

What I especially like about FST is that a player’s background factors into the shopping experience. Backgrounds are often forgotten immediately after character creation.  Additionally, FST is packed with dozens of tables that leads to deals, steals, double-crosses, fights and adventures.

Fantasy Shopping Table is available now on the Dungeon Master’s Guide, where the
16-page PDF retails for $2.99. Personally, I think it is worth every penny as it creates a more dynamic downtime shopping experience.

20 D&D Sorcerer Quest Ideas

Posted in D&D 5e, D&D Fifth Edition, D&D Next, Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder with tags , , , , on April 12, 2019 by boccobsblog

Sorcerer Quest Ideas

This week our guest writer is Dan Abbott, and he has crafted 20 D&D sorcerer quest ideas.

The sorcerer, imbued by fate with powers beyond the ken of mortals, inspires envy and suspicion in equal measure. Their strange, intrinsic connection with arcane force can be a blessing or a curse, and each sorcerer must come to grips with the fact that they are fundamentally different from everyone else they know, whether they like it or not. Whether they learn to accept their curse or embrace their gift, sorcerers can tap into the power of the multiverse and shape it to their will. Yet another reason to not pick on the weird kid at lunch….

1. Racial tensions rise when the beornings raise the price of honey at market day, blaming the human village for a mysterious illness among the bees.

2. A boy with unexplained powers is blamed for the village’s misfortune, and will be burned at the stake at first light if no one intervenes.

3. An important bridge across a misty ravine has collapsed, and the work crew sent to rebuild it has disappeared, leaving grisly clues behind.

4. A bitter nobleman hires the party to help spy on his romantic rival, who has dark secrets he will do anything to conceal.

5. At an orc-dwarf treaty signing brokered by humans, a high-ranking officer of the dwarvish iron mining guild is found murdered, threatening a fragile peace.

6. A wealthy merchant’s impetuous and spoiled son craves adventure, and wants to investigate an abandoned keep rumored to be haunted. The merchant will pay the party handsomely to see that the boy stays out of trouble.

7. A rash of unexplained murders at the university is causing panic, as construction begins on a new campus library.

8. Dark dreams plague an aging duke, even as, one by one, his rivals die mysteriously in the night. The duchess hires the party to watch over him, in case he is next to be killed.

9. The old hermit in the hills was once a renowned healer, they say. Perhaps he will know how to stop the strange fever that began near the crypts.

10. A dangerous relic of the Old People is found in a tunnel, awakening an eons-old evil that could end the world a second time.

11. During a lightning storm, a castaway from another world appears, wielding strange weapons and arcane powers. But her troubles have followed her to your world, and sending her back requires the party to make some dark choices.

12. A new prophet has arisen among the human population, preaching a fanatical religion of blood and fire. But who… or what… are they really worshiping?

13. Passing by an ancient circle of standing stones, you are stricken by excruciating pain, and the knowledge that something terrible is slowly clawing its way into your world.

14. The newly pious king outlaws magic and other “heresies”, upon pain of death. Help smuggle a small group of elderly wizards out of the kingdom before the king’s inquisitors can find them.

15. You are approached by an old adventurer who says they are your future self, and asks you to commit a seemingly horrific crime to change future events for the better.

16. One of the king’s most trusted advisors is discovered to be a vampire, revealing a terrifying plot centuries in the planning.

17. When an artificer is arrested by the crown’s inquisitors, a device which detects beings of magical nature falls into the hands of the authorities.

18. A powerful wizard from the Academy challenges you to a magical duel, seeking to prove once and for all the superiority of academic magic over sorcery.

19. An old friend of the party, who retired from adventuring after losing a hand, is framed for a murder he could not have committed.

20. The recent crop blight and plague of strange monsters is traced back to a glowing object, which exudes magical energy too deadly for mortals to approach. The local baron is determined to possess it for himself.

Spoiler-Free Captain Marvel Review

Posted in Films, Movie Review with tags , , on March 20, 2019 by boccobsblog

Spolier-Free Review Captain Marvel

Today I offer you a spoiler-free review of Captain Marvel. In true B3 fashion, here is the Good, the Badass, and the Ugly.

Details:

Directors:

Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck

The Good

  • The Stan tribute is touching and deserved.
  • The 90s nostalgia is enjoyable.
  • The dialogue is funny.
  • Captain Marvel kicks ass
  • A female MCU female lead was overdue

The Badass

  • The film has an amazing mid-90s soundtrack.
  • The 90’s nostalgia
  • Brie Larson is funny and effortless on screen.
  • Ben Mendelsohn is hilarious and cool as Talos

The Ugly

  • The plot is beyond weak, to the point of being ludicrous (see below, minor spoilers).
  • Samuel L. Jackson is fun to watch and amusing, but it isn’t Nick Fury. He isn’t even close to the badass we see in the other MCU films. A badass that was carved over a lifetime, not after an adventure in the mid 90s.
  • Sorry, but Goose is doofy and over the top.
  • Captain Marvel seems too little too late to be considered a victory for feminism/diversity. The African American actors are still relegated to support roles. I’m not trying to downplay the first female MCU lead role, but it should have happened years ago, not weeks before the story wraps up. Marvel could also have risked the nerd rage to present a more diverse actress.

Don’t get me wrong, Captain Marvel is a fun excuse to eat popcorn; but a lazy plot and the campy over the top comedy makes it just another superhero flick. It feels like a hastily constructed attempt to cram Captain Marvel into the MCU before Endgame. If Captain Marvel is a triumph for feminism/diversity, then we have set the bar very low. Despite my criticisms, I had fun watching this movie.

Mild Spoiler Section

  • Ronin literally uses faster than light speed to reach Earth in minutes. Why do we need slow (by MCU standards) light speed?
  • Why wouldn’t Fury have summoned CM when Earth was invaded the first time? The more movies you add to the MCU the more plot holes you’ll create.

Only mighty archwizards who have mastered the arcane arts become juggernauts of mystical powers and wield reality at the palm at their hand. But like all adventurers, a wizard will embark on a quest in their search for power, knowledge, and truth. Maybe they’ll learn something more along the way.

  7. You are hired for your arcane skills to help escort an important dignitary across hostile territory, utilizing your cunning and magical spells to pass undetected across open road.

  14. You have been commissioned by a local blacksmith to decipher a series of runes etched on a recently acquired suit of armor, but you realize the runes are from a dead civilization many assumed to be a myth.
  15. Your party has been hired for an expedition into a dangerous ruin full of ancient traps and deadly arcane wards, but the area makes magic unstable when cast.
  16. An odd curse has befallen one your party members, causing them to age younger with each passing day, soon they will cease to exist unless you can find the source and reverse it.
  17. You seek entry to an acclaim library said to house the world’s knowledge but in order to enter, you must present a book or piece of written work of near priceless quality.
  18. You found a skull inhabited but a spirit of intellect that possesses massive stores of knowledge, during your inquiries, you hear of a mystical tome that belonged to a powerful archwizard that has been deceased for centuries.
  19. In your studies, you learn that certain stars and constellations align once every few hundred years that bring results in calamity and destruction, and that the event was approaching within one week.
  20. A coalition of sheep herders hires you and your party to help prevent more missing sheep at night, some have suggested for you to use magic to disguise the sheep.

It’s the summer of 1969, and the shock of conflict reverberates through the youth of America, both at home and abroad. As a student at a quiet college campus in the heartland of Indiana, Terry Ives couldn’t be farther from the front lines of Vietnam or the incendiary protests in Washington.

But the world is changing, and Terry isn’t content to watch from the sidelines. When word gets around about an important government experiment in the small town of Hawkins, she signs on as a test subject for the project, code-named MKULTRA. Unmarked vans, a remote lab deep in the woods, mind-altering substances administered by tight-lipped researchers . . . and a mystery the young and restless Terry is determined to uncover.

But behind the walls of Hawkins National Laboratory—and the piercing gaze of its director, Dr. Martin Brenner—lurks a conspiracy greater than Terry could have ever imagined. To face it, she’ll need the help of her fellow test subjects, including one so mysterious the world doesn’t know she exists—a young girl with unexplainable superhuman powers and a number instead of a name: 008.

Amid the rising tensions of the new decade, Terry Ives and Martin Brenner have begun a different kind of war—one where the human mind is the battlefield.
